  • Grand Theft Auto 4 first day sales breaks sales record in UK

    + Posted By Jake S.

Everyone knew that Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 4 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3) would be one of the biggest releases of this year. It shouldn't really come as a surprise that the game's first day sales in the U.K. already hit 609,000 copies according to data from Chart Track.

These sales numbers have established GTA 4 as the fastest selling game over a 24-hour period in the U.K. The record was previously set by Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which sold 501,000 copies back in October 29, 2004.

Another testament to the popularity of GTA 4 is that it also beat out the current champs of each console.

It was revealed that 335,000 copies of the Xbox 360 version of the game were purchased on the first day, beating out Halo 3's 266,000 copies sold. On the PlayStation 3 side, 274,000 copies of the game were sold, edging out Gran Turismo Prologue which previously set the record at 80,000 copies sold.

  • Rockstar support comments on GTA 4 freezing issue

    + Posted By Jake S.

A call to Rockstar's support service revealed that the company is investigating what could be behind the freezing issues exhibited by the company's newly launched Grand Theft Auto IV (Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360), but they've obviously been caught unawares.

As the Kotaku caller continued to probe the factors that could've led to the introductory sequence lockups, the support rep who attended the call mentioned that it wasn't limited to the PlayStation 3.

The rep was very apologetic about the issue (and relieved for not being yelled at for once) and claimed that the GTA4 also seemed to lock up on some Xbox 360s. Now this has made it very confusing for Rockstar, as they've previously noticed how most of the reports for PS3 lockups were attributed to the 60GB version of Sony's console.

What made them even more puzzled is that not all of the 60 GB versions exhibited this issue. Seems a bit familiar, doesn't it? Especially for an SKU that seems to be racking up erratic issues.

Anyways, this coupled with the complaints from Microsoft's side make for an unlikely chance that a solution for the problem would come out soon.

When a user-claimed solution (allegedly given by Rockstar's support representatives) was suggested, the representative said that such a solution has never been officially confirmed by support or tech to solve the issue. In fact, he said that cleaning out the PS3 hard drive of all GTA4 related data and re-installing was never heard to have helped a single complainant. But he hinted that it might not hurt to try.

The rep says that no deadline for a fix can be promised, but we'll be keeping our eyes peeled for more updates anyway.

  • Grand Theft Auto 4 street date broken in UK retail

    + Posted By Jake S.

Unfortunately, people just can't seem to hold their patience for the release of Rockstar's much-awaited and much-coveted Grand Theft Auto 4 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3).

A couple of days after reports that the game was leaked onto the Internet and feasted upon by thousands of hungry gamers, here now comes news that retailers in the UK have actually broken the street date. The image you see above is that of GTA 4's copy with receipt of purchase from UK retailer giant ASDA, as first circulated in the European PlayStation forum.

Duncan Cross of ASDA has released this statement:

This is an isolated incident, we had a clear message to stores not to sell early, and so any copies that have gone on sale are miniscule. We have no policy to sell before the street date, and we'll make sure this doesn't happen again.

Meanwhile, more posts are pouring in the European forums with claims that they have also purchased their copy of the game from independent stores. While we have to admit it is exciting to finally have the controversial game around, we're just as certain that not everyone will be exactly gung-ho about it.

Take Two, but whatever happened to your foolproof plan of street date security? We heard they even had retailers sign agreements that no one will break the street date. Oh, but somebody's gonna be so angry, and it's not gonna look pretty.

  • Microsoft ranked above Sony and Nintendo in innovation

    + Posted By Jake S.

BusinessWeek recently released its list of The World 50 Most Innovative Companies. Companies are ranked according to votes made by nearly 3,000 executives from the largest corporations in the world.

Now if you're into the business side of video gaming - or if you're just curious - you probably want to know how the manufacturer of your favorite console fared. This year, Microsoft was ranked above its competitors, Sony and Nintendo.

Microsoft was listed as the 5th most innovative companies in the world, while Nintendo ranked at 7th place, and Sony at 9th. Last year, Microsoft also ranked above the other two, while Sony was at 10th place and Nintendo at 39th.

It must be noted that considerations for voting were centered on the companies' products - meaning all of the companies' products during the time period and not just their consoles. Now with that in mind, it comes to no surprise who topped this year's list (again). Guess who? None other than Apple...

  • More GTA 4 rumors: 5-minute install times, Xbox 360 DLC features

    + Posted By Jake S.

With only a couple of weeks to go before Rockstar Games' flagship title Grand Theft Auto 4 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3) goes out, a couple of rumors regarding the title's release has once again popped up. Neogaf forum poster Skip (a.k.a. Andrew Pfister, writer of 1UP's GTA 4 preview) revealed that the upcoming game will have a five-minute mandatory install time for the PlayStation 3 version.

It was further revealed that the installation for the Xbox 360 version of GTA 4 is a completely optional feature. Unfortunately, there's been no confirmation from Rockstar whether this will make it in the final version of the game when it ships to retail stores.

In addition, word from CVG's GTA 4 special feature has it that the Xbox 360-exclusive downloadable content for the game won't just contain the odd car or additional skins. The DLC will supposedly contain an area as significant as Vice City or San Andreas. Should this rumor be true, it'll definitely extend playability for the Xbox 360 version by leaps and bounds.

We only have less than two weeks to go before the release of Grand Theft Auto 4, so we might as well wait and see how Rockstar decides to play out its cards until then. In any case, make sure to come back to this spot for more updates regarding this much anticipated title.

  • GTA IV is 'biggest ever title' for PS3 in Europe

    + Posted By Jake S.

No one will be surprised by this statement: Grand Theft Auto IV's pre-order sales are doing incredibly well. In fact, the game is in dangerously low supply due to the incredible demand. European retailer Play.com has already sold out of its GTA pre-orders, and GAME and Gamestation are both getting close as well.

In Europe, GTA IV has become a system seller for the PS3. It seems like people are more interested in picking up Sony's black box over on that side of the Atlantic. Play.com's head of games Gian Luzio told MCV that GTA IV is "far and away the biggest selling title" he'd ever seen on PS3. It's "already proving a real hardware driver ... I've been really blown away by how quickly it's sold on PS3."

While that's great news for SCEE, it'll be interesting to see how the American launch will also fare later this month. Stay tuned.

  • Ubisoft: Haze "definitely" out May 23

    + Posted By Jake S.

There's been a lot of whines and moans about the delays on Ubisoft and Free Radical's upcoming PlayStation 3 exclusive Haze. We all remember how it was supposedly confirmed for release on May 22, only to for the statement to be taken back shortly after.

Don't look now, but we picked up a news bit that will either give you new hope or piss you right off.

Eurogamer reports that they've contacted a Ubisoft spokesperson who said Haze will "definitely" be out on May 23 to give Nectar-craving PS3 fans their fills. Of course, by now those waiting for the title would probably take the item with a grain of salt.

Well, it looks like we'll have to wait for more confirmation on this one. We know it's tough to get your hopes up and get your heart sunk in a span of 24 hours. Check back with us for more updates.

  • Rockstar produces edited version of Grand Theft Auto 4 for Australia

    + Posted By Jake S.

History has a tendency to repeat itself, doesn't it? In this case, it's Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 4 (PS3, Xbox 360) and the Australian Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC). The situation: An edited version of GTA 4 will sell in The Land Down Under on April 29.

This time, the developer took the first step and applied the censor's scissors straight away, as the OFLC has no R18 rating in its system. When you have a game with masturbation and other explicit sexual references, a certain amount of care is especially needed.

Nevertheless, with all the run-ins that Rockstar has had with the OFLC in the past, it's understandable that the developer would do that. After all, the OFLC frowned upon GTA 3, GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas after mature content was discovered in those titles. It took some editing on Rockstar's part before the OFLC allowed those games on store shelves.

Here's the clincher: Rockstar hasn't revealed exactly which material has been cut. Unless the company chooses to do otherwise, it looks like a little game of compare and contrast is in order.

  • New SOCOM: Confrontation details

    + Posted By Jake S.

The latest issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM) has revealed a load of new details regarding Slant Six Games' SOCOM: Confrontation. This title is the latest entry in the third-person tactical shooter franchise and will be available for the Sony PlayStation 3.

First off, the maps are bigger in SOCOM: Confrontation. These big maps will be sectioned off to allow for additional smaller close combat maps, however. Rooftops have also become more accessible.

Cover is also a big thing in this new title. There's no snap-to cover, but players will instead be able to tilt their controllers forward in order to lean against a wall. There's also a new sprint option that will let players run for an infinite amount of time. While this may sound unbalanced, players will not be able to shoot while sprinting. It will also take players a moment to pull their guns back up and fire accurately.

Due to the sprinting option, there will be no vehicles in SOCOM: Confrontation. Fog has also been removed, but snipers won't be overpowered thanks to the sheer number of cover options in the game. Physics-based grenades are also in the game, so players can now choose to either throw a grenade or just roll it towards an enemy.

Clan customization options have also been beefed up with special camo patterns and insignias. Clan management through socom.com has also been simplified. Matches between clans are now done automatically to minimize the chances of one clan customizing the game to their advantage. Custom clan matches are still available, but clan rank won't rise as fast.

Well, there you have it. Sounds like SOCOM: Confrontation will be one hell of a treat for tactical shooter fans. The game is currently slated for a September 16 release, to watch out for it.

  • GameStop shows off new Grand Theft Auto 4 commercial

    + Posted By Jake S.

Video game retailer GameStop and Rockstar Games have come up with a new collaboration tied into the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 4 title for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. This latest commercial plug showcases some of the unseen features from the game and steps up the hype for its release this month.

The new advertisement for the game stars Jeremy St. Ives, one of the many characters of the game, as he describes the rough and tumble life in Liberty City. The video commercial certainly adds a quirky spin to GTA 4's mature rating, but sells the game quite effectively just the same.

Don't take our word for it, though. You can take a look at it for yourselves by playing the embedded video we have below. Enjoy!
