PS3 Game of the Year, chosen by top gaming sites

Well, it is now official... Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare won the 'Game of the Year' on PS3 Fanboy as well as here at PS INFORMANT! Here is what all of the major gaming resources had to say about their choices for 'Game of the Year.

GameDaily chose Call of Duty 4. "The campaign excels where most of its competition fails, delivering a nail-biting experience we couldn't walk away from until the explosive finale."
GameTrailers chose Call of Duty 4. "The authenticity on display here is to be commended, getting you as close as you can possibly be to something that far braver people experience--without the risk."
GameSpot chose Call of Duty 4. "Modern Warfare is now the benchmark against which all console shooters will be judged, and we're not expecting it to be bettered anytime soon."
GameSpy chose Call of Duty 4. "A game that hit every target it aimed for, from its gripping single-player campaign to the ridiculously addictive I've-almost-got-enough-XP-for-that-cool-gun multiplayer."
IGN chose Uncharted. "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune serves as the culmination of fun gameplay, an immersive story, stunning graphics, superb sound and characters you can connect with."
Looks like the critical mass agreed with us on the incredible power of Call of Duty 4. Did you enjoy the game as much as we did?

New Mercenaries 2: World in Flames screenshots

Pandemic Studios' Mercenaries 2: World in Flames (Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3, PC) is shaping up to be an explosive title - literally. It's got tanks, choppers, and other hot stuff that your own band of mercenaries can use, which you can find in these screenshots of the game.

As the title implies, in Mercenaries 2, you're a man for hire. Unlike its predecessor, you can also recruit fellow hired-operatives to take on difficult missions that require a lot of firepower. Those comrades don't necessarily have to be computer controlled, because co-op play allows your pals to join in the fun.

When you earn enough dough, you can avail of new equipment, vehicles, and even air-strikes. The screenshots below should give you a good idea of what Pandemic Studios' playground of destruction looks like. Expect it to be on shelves next year. (Source)

Tomb Raider Underworld details

Looking forward to Lara Croft's new adventure in Tomb Raider Underworld? Well so are we. Here's something to make the wait easier for you (or more difficult, depending on how you take it): new info of the game from magazines PSM3 and CD-Action.

It's been revealed before that the story of Tomb Raider Underworld (360, PS3, PC) will center on Lara solving the mysteries of the Mayan civilization. Now it's also been revealed that the new game will not have Lara going back to places she's been in before.

The game will have Lara exploring different parts of the world this time. It's been reported she'll be traveling to locations in Australia, Easter Island, Rome, the Vatican, Mesopotamia, and the Golden Triangle in Southeast Asia.

As most of the locations are in places that haven't been touched for centuries, there won't be a lot of human enemies. Instead, Lara will be facing off with monsters, some of mythological nature.

The new save system also allows the game to take a snapshot of debris and felled enemies as they are. Remnants of battle such as enemies you defeated will also be saved to file. Load your game again and everything will look the same as you've left it - assuming you did save.

One exciting new feature of the game is that Lara will have dynamic use of both her hands, mixing action and platforming in the game. She can now do actions like shoot her gun while hanging from a ledge at the same time.

Condemned 2 Delayed until March 08

I am personally very excited about having Condemned 2: Bloodshot available for PS3 this time around! Following the unfortunate trend of other gaming companies, Sega has pushed back the release date of the game from February 2008 to March 2008. This is both good and bad of course. It could be good due to the fact that it will only give the company more time to improve the game and hopefully remove any annoying glitches. It is also good because it is only a one month delay which is far better than Haze, GTA4, and Home!

Check back frequently for further details on Condemned 2: Bloodshot!

Pre-order Haze, get a nectar-filled syringe pen

We've seen some pretty wacky pre-order bonuses in the past, but this offer from Ubisoft might top them all. If you pre-order Haze from Ubisoft's store, you'll receive a free nectar-filled syringe pen. Of course, there's not real nectar, a "nutritional supplement" in Haze, actually in the pen, which could be a deal breaker for a few of you out there.

However, this deal might be only good for Europeans since Ubisoft's asking price is about £50, which makes it one of the most expensive PS3 games you could buy. Add to that a £17 shipping fee and £10 in taxes, and you'll be spending nearly $150 for this bad boy. Yeah, best we let the Europeans keep this deal for themselves. (Source)

The Club: Split-Screen multiplayer video

Because we can't get enough videos of Sega and Bizarre Creations' The Club (Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3, PC), here are some snippets of the third-person shooter's multiplayer and time attack modes.

The game offers various multiplayer modes such as Team Skull Shot and Score Match, but from what we see in the video, it seems satisfying enough to just go four-player split-screen in a dog-eat-dog free-for-all.

If The Club's multiplayer demo doesn't sound too exciting, you can also check out the time attack gameplay video featuring one of the levels where you'll be taking enemies down to buy time and earn points for bragging rights. See it for yourself - the videos are embedded below. (Source)

Gaming industry benefits from Writers' Strike

Weren't able to catch your TV programs because of the writer's strike? Well pick up your controller and play video games.

At least, that's what Joseph Olin, president of the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, thinks will happen to you and every other stranded TV viewer left high and dry by the strike.

Olin believes that the strike will actually help the video game industry. Unlike TV media at large, video game writers that are part of the Writer's Guild of America are not under the jurisdiction of the current strike. Says Joseph Colin:

"If you're a fan of network programming, maybe seeing another repeat of "Pushing Daisies" or "Cold Case" will inspire you to finish that level of Ratchet and Clank Future instead.

There's a much better relationship between game developers and publishers than there appears to be in terms of all the polemics between the writers, producers and studios."

On a lighter note of the strike, video game writers may be getting their due as well as the 2008 WGA awards will be recognizing video game writing as well. The move hopes to raise the profile of video game writers.

Downloading Unreal Tournnament 3 content

To make things easier for PlayStation Unreal Tournament 3 (PC, Xbox 360, PS3) gamers, someone from the official PS3 forums managed to come up with a way of downloading Epic Games' Unreal Tournament 3 user content directly to your USB device or memory card, using your PS3's Internet Browser.

Since gamers can't directly save mods into the hard drive, this method involves using a media storage device (USB drive or memory card) and a PC to set it up, aside from a PS3 running Unreal Tournament 3.

For those who are tired of going through the usual process in downloading the user content, this how-to guide sure offers a bit of comfort for weary gamers. However, you may want to be a bit careful in downloading many user mods, since some gamers are complaining about UT3 user content causing their consoles to crash.

Microsoft working on 'better' Metal Gear Solid 4

Here's a new twist to an old rumor: huge PlayStation 3 franchise exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4 has always been surrounded by talks of going multiplatform but now there seems to be a rumor going around that Microsoft is going at it with a different approach.

The rumor doesn't say whether Microsoft is still pressing for MGS to go multiplatform. However, it does say that Microsoft is developing a game that will rival the franchise that made Solid Snake a video game staple.

According to the digital grapevine, Microsoft is meeting with a "highly talented studio" to make something "better than Snake." It doesn't end there though; the rumor adds that Microsoft executives have already seen the demo of this game and were "thoroughly impressed."

All the game needs, apparently, is deciding on whether it should be told from a first or third person perspective. The game supposedly takes place in the future and its storyline will be centered on major political events from the last few years.

Perhaps the biggest claim in the rumor is that the game offers visuals that

"were previously thought to be next to impossible on the Xbox 360 and is supposed to look better than any PS3 game that has been shown or is available on the platform exclusively till date.

Metal Gear loggerheads and fanatics are going to have an insanely twisted time with the game."

Note though, that aside from the testimony of the source of the rumor, nothing else was offered to support the existence of the game. Perhaps it exists, perhaps it doesn't. We'll have to wait for more news to come in.

Then again, we may be waiting for more rumors to come in. Or no news to come in. At any rate, we'll have to wait and take this rumor with a grain of salt.

Increase PS3 storage capacity

Even with the release of Sony's 80GB PlayStation 3 console, sometimes 80GB of hard disk space isn't enough to satisfy all the downloading delights some of us have. There's a solution to this, however. CNET Asia's James Yu has come up with a very useful DIY tutorial on how to increase the HDD capacity of your PS3.

Yu mentions that the PS3's hard disk is compatible with just about any 2.5-inch SATA notebook hard disk. What's important is that you get the right size to fit into the 2.5-inch drive tray of your console. As for storage capacity, he recommends going for any of the big HDD sizes ranging from 120GB to as high as 250GB.

If you have any existing data on your PS3's hard disk, don't forget to back it up using either an external storage device or copy selected files in the XMB. Don't forget to format the new hard disk you want to install under FAT32 since that's the file format system that the PS3 recognizes.

Everything after that is pretty much the usual handyman job with a Philips-head screwdriver and some screws. For a more detailed explanation of the tutorial complete with pictures, you can take a look at it through CNET Asia, accessible through the Via link below.

Golden Axe: Beast Rider official site up now

The Golden Axe franchise belongs to that pantheon of 2D classics that Sega spawned in the 90's. We know a lot of you long-time gamers are excited about the next-gen sequel Golden Axe: Beast Rider. We caught word of an interesting development and thought you'll be glad to hear it.

Sega has now launched the official website for Golden Axe: Beast Rider and it looks kinda nice. Sure, it's still just a teaser site, but it does give us a place to rally to when hunting for updates.

Unlike the 2D action, RPG and fighting game iterations of the Golden Axe series, sources have stated that Golden Axe: Beast Rider will have us galloping about in an exotic land aboard a mean steed. This adds a new dimension to the very competitive action genre in the next-gen arena. Golden Axe: Beast Rider is expected to hit the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 in Summer of 2008.

Street Fighter IV: Hadoken gameplay video

Armchair pugilists rejoice - the first-ever gameplay video of Capcom's highly-anticipated sequel to the legendary series, Street Fighter IV, has just surfaced, and in it we see Ryu and Ken tearing it up 2D-style. Sure, the characters themselves are rendered lovingly into muscle-bulging 3D, but you have to admit, the guys over at Capcom have done a pretty neat job of preserving the art of throwing fireballs and spinning kicks.

Looking at the video, the action in Street Fighter IV is fast and furious. The two Shotokan fighters throwing dragon punches and fireballs in a pace and clip that can only be described as ridiculously fluid. One thing we like in particular is how the characters display realistic, if not exaggerated faces of pain whenever they receive a particularly nasty-looking punch or attack. Then again, if your opponent puts enough strength in an uppercut that it makes lets him jump six feet into the air in a blazing tower of fire, then it really should hurt.

No more spoilers from us, enjoy the video! Stay tuned for more Street Fighter IV goodies and news.

Atari cut from NASDAQ for low market value

After posting substantial losses in its latest financial report, Atari received a warning from NASDAQ stating the video game company may be removed from the list for its low market value of below US 15 million. According to the Associated Press via Forbes, Atari will be off NASDAQ's charts if its stock remains that low for 30 consecutive days.

Atari has up to March 20 to comply. Beyond that, the company can appeal if it receives another notice of delisting. Just recently, Atari settled issues with FUNimation and regained the rights to publish Dragon Ball Z titles. The company also made agreements with shareholder Infogrames to increase its credit limit, so it's not all that bad.

Atari's fiscal Q2 2007 financial report show that it lost US 7.7 million. To address dropping revenues, the company went under restructuring which involved the resignation of former CEO David Pierce. Atari also decided to stop developing games to focus on publishing, but analysts believe it may become a pure distribution business soon.

Stream Media from PC to PS3 to PSP

The current generation of consoles are powerful machines and carry a lot of features so sometimes it's a little hard to keep track of what they can do. Here's one feature a lot of you may not have been aware of but may find useful: stream media to your PSP from your PC via PS3.

To do this you'll need to connect your PC to a PlayStation 3 console to act as the bridge. Using the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA), your PS3 can connect to your PC and share media. Then with Remote Play, you can stream the media to your PSP.

First off, you'll need to connect the PS3 to your PC's home network (you can use an Ethernet cable for this if your connection isn't wireless). Here are the instructions from Sony's Eric Lempel on how to connect it:
On your PC, enable Media Sharing on Windows Media Player 11 and allow sharing with the PS3 (it may be labeled as an unknown device ).
On your PS3, turn on Media Server Connection under Network Settings. PS3 will automatically search for media servers on the same home network, or you can scan for them manually.
Your PC and media files will pop up under the Photo/Music/Video XMB icons.
After that you just need to stream your files to your PSP from your PS3 via Wi-Fi. Note that you'll need at least PS3 FW 1.80 for this, but of course FW 2.10 would be the better choice for media playing because of the new DivX support.

Study shows: Video games may damage brain

Department of Psychiatry of Taipei Veterans General Hospital Doctor Chou Yuan-hua showed that prolonged playing of violent video games may actually damage the brain.

The experiment took in 30 people, each one aged 25. The sample population then underwent physical examinations to monitor the blood circulation before and after playing a video game for 30 minutes.

Results showed that playing games actually decreased blood flow to the brain. Those who were exposed to violent games saw an even bigger drop in blood circulation. These have also been proven by previous studies.

Chou pointed out that the decrease in blood to the brain could potentially damage two parts of the internal organ: the frontal lobe of the brain and the anterior cingulate gyrus. The doctor also mentioned that based on previous clinical experiences, individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia or depression have lower blood flow in their frontal lobes and anterior cingulate gyruses.

So does this mean that we have to give up our hobby of gaming? Well, far from it. While no conclusions have been made about this decrease in blood flow, the study should serve as a reminder for all you game-loving folks out there: playing for extended periods of time on a regular basis is not healthy.

PS Store: download PS3 content with PSP

Sometimes, downloading content gets in the way of just playing games and takes away a good chunk of that time. Thankfully though, Sony Computer Entertainment America's PR Manager Al de Leon posted a nice little trick that you can do with your PS3 and PSP regarding exactly that.

For the trick to work, you will have to own a PlayStation 3 and a PlayStation Portable registered to the the console. If you've done that, you can control your PS3 from any WiFi spot using your PSP.

Simply log on to the PlayStation Store using your account and download what you want to play. By the time you get home, your system should be ready and properly set up for your gaming session.

If you need a more detailed instruction on how to set this up, feel free to head on over to the official PlayStation blog via our source link below.

Midway: "fewer, bigger, better games for 2008"

With 2007 coming to a close in a few more days, Midway is all set for next year's upcoming releases, but not without some changes to their marketing stance. In a recent interview, Midway CEO David Zucker revealed his game launch strategy for 2008 as "fewer, bigger, better."

It also looks like "starstruck" should be in there as well, based in Midway's plans to launch games with heavy Hollywood tie-ins. Zucker reiterated on the recent success for Stranglehold (PC, PS3, Xbox 360), which he states has sold a total of one million copies since its launch last October.

Moving on to Midway's 2008 launch plans, Zucker talked about the upcoming Wheelman title which would prequel a similarly named film starring Vin Diesel. The rights for the film adaptation have been bought by MTV Films and Paramount Pictures.

Zucker then discussed their other game projects for 2008, which include NBA Ballers (Xbox 360, PS3), and TNA Impact (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii), the latter being based on Spike TV's pro-wrestling program of the same name. Midway is further expected to launch a new Mortal Kombat title by the end of 2008.

Phone book found inside PS3 box from EB Games

Saying Christmas is the time for surprises is no understatement for 13-year old Brandon Burns from Thousand Oaks, who unboxed what appeared to be a Sony PlayStation 3 only to find a phone book. The package was bought from EB Games for the full price of US 500.

According to Fox News, Brandon wasn't particularly upset. The young man laughed about what he discovered inside the box, but his parents weren't very happy. Brandon's folks are planning to keep the phone book and the PS3's box, then take the receipt to the Thousand Oaks mall where they made the purchase.

The Burns were at least able to get the copies of Skate and Pirates of the Caribean: At World's End that were supposed to be Brandon's first games. For now, here's to hoping they can also claim the console they paid a good amount of money for.

Experts develop "super-chip" to improve gaming

A team of experts from Glasgow University and U.S. Semiconductor Research Corporation are now working on developing a new generation of "super chips" meant to make ultra-realistic video games.

According to them, the silicon chips that are currently being used in computers and gaming consoles already reached the peak of their capabilities, hence the need for the super chips. One of the experts, Professor Iain Thayne from Glasgow University, said:

What gamers want is to develop games that make you feel as though you are part of the synthesised world. It is the silicon chips installed in games consoles which are holding this development back and so by increasing the power of chips, a whole new generation of computer games can be launched.

The project, supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, is set to be completed within three years, and the chips will be ready for use by gaming manufacturers by then.

Aside from gaming consoles, the experts also said that the chips they are working on can be used to extend battery life and increase the speed of various electronic gadgets such as mobile phones, computer, and laptops.

PSN Cards Available in the US

It seems that Sony has broken their habit of pushing back release dates and actually decided to release something early for a change! Originally North America's Playstation Network Cards were to become available in early 2008. Kotaku reader, Aerfox reported, "he's spotted US 20 versions of the said card at the U.S. Army base in Aberdeen, Maryland."

No further details have been released about this, however it does seem likely that we will be seeing PSN cards in the US at your local retailers in no time at all.

The PSN Cards are a great addition to the PSN world, especially for the young gamers out there without credit cards.

More Gran Turismo 5 Prologue online patch details

Still drooling over the screenshots of the Gran Turismo 5 Prologue online patch from Polyphony Digital? We managed to scrounge up more information that may just prompt you to go out of your way and get your GT 5 Prologue patched (even if it's in Japanese). According to IGN, the online races run smoothly with minimal lag, which is pretty remarkable for the first release of the online feature.

It should be noted that online races in Gran Turismo 5 Prologue have some limitations and set racing conditions depending on the tracks. For example, a beginner's race in Daytona Speedway will have three laps, a maximum of eight players, and is limited to using only sports cars. On the other hand, a mid-level race at Suzuka will have two laps, a maximum of eight players, and are also limited to using sports class cars.

Here are the other conditions and limitations in GT 5 Prologue Day 1, as noted by IGN:

Upper-level race event at Fuji: three laps, max eight players, using super car class

Upper-level race event at Fuji: three laps, max sixteen players, all using Elize 111R in professional mode with S1 tires.

Beginner's time trial at Daytona: using middle car class

Mid-level time trial at Eiger: using sports car class

Upper-level time trial at Daytona: using super car class

Upper-level time trial in London: using super car class in professional mode with S1 tires.

As for the other good stuff, virtual racing enthusiasts may be pleased to know that loading times don't hinder the experience during online time trial races, and that gamers, after ending a race, are immediately sent back to the online menu screen to go and join another one, seamlessly.

More details and updates to come!

PS3: Haze release date-August 2008?

Ubisoft announced back in November 2007 that some of its highly-anticipated video games will not be able to make their scheduled release dates.

One of the games listed was the PlayStation 3 exclusive Haze which was pushed back to the Q1 2008. We hate to break the bad news to you but it seems that FPS-loving gamers might need to find some other things to do to keep themselves busy.

Haze is reportedly being pushed back again with a new target release of August 2008. While Ubisoft has yet to issue an official statement about the matter, its online store has revealed the new information on its product page for Free Radical Design's futuristic game set in a war-torn country.

Despite the delay, Haze is currently being offered over Ubisoft's online store as a pre-order for US 59.99. Interested parties may place an order via the Ubisoft website.

If you've hummed to the tune of Still Alive one too many times, or fantasized going into war with the invigorating sounds of Team Fortress 2 (Xbox 360, PC, PS3), then you might want to consider buying the original soundtrack of The Orange Box.

Recently released by Valve and now available for purchase through its online store website, this disc full of unique audio goodness can be yours for the paltry sum of US 9.95. Sweet.

So, what does this gift from the treasure vaults of Gabe Newell contain? Why, music from all the games in The Orange Box, of course! That means the music from Half-Life 2: Episode 1 and Episode 2(PC, Xbox 360, PS3) Team Fortress 2, and Portal(Xbox 360, PC, PS3) is all safely packed inside its orange wrapping, waiting to be feasted upon the minute you place it in a CD tray.

There's also the deal with the "Still Alive" track having a bonus version unavailable anywhere else. GlaDOS would be proud. In the off-chance that you're not into The Orange Box, it'd make an awesome stocking stuffer, to say the least. So go with it.

Wisconsin senator wants more gaming taxes

Wisconsin State Senator Jon Erpenbach caused quite a stir in the gaming scene lately with a new legislation he plans to pass. The new law seeks to put a 1 percent surcharge on every game sale to fund a juvenile justice program.

Specifics aren't clear year on how this will work out, but gamers expect that they'll have to carry the additional burden.

This was met with opposition by gamers who are aware about the bill. Gamers are saying that the tax creates an impression that gaming is a bad thing that needs to have additional taxes on it.

"I just think [the video game tax is] pretty unfair to attack gamers and have them pay for something they, more than likely, have nothing to do with," says adult Wisconsin gamer Justin Sallows.

"I think it’s a real problem," he adds. "Even if that’s not what the intention is, it creates the impression that there’s something wrong with the video games because we need to put some extra tax on there to try to dissuade people from playing them."

"The [video game tax] idea being that this is kind of a kids-kids thing, in other words, if we’re going to do this for kids maybe this would be a good way to go about it," reacts the legislator. "And if it’s not the best way, I’m open to any other way."

European 80GB PS3 confirmed?

A newsletter backed by Sony reportedly revealed that 80GB PlayStation 3 models are coming to Europe. According to newsletter HD World which is supported by Sony, there's a "yet-to-be-launched European 80GB PS3."

HD World, known to promote Sony's Blu-ray format, sent out what was supposed to forecast the Blu-ray's bright future in Europe. Apparently, information specialist and consulting company Understanding & Solutions predicts HD DVD and Blu-ray players will cost $275 and $475 respectively in Europe by 2008.

What took our interest, of course, is the mention of the 80GB PS3 after that. The said company believes the "yet-to-be-launched European 80GB PS3" will go for around US 500 in late 2008.

Sony Europe was asked for comment and a spokesperson replied:

The HD World newsletter is written by external sources, and the report quoted is from independent analysts. There is absolutely no 80GB version of the PS3 planned for Europe in 2008.

Back in July, Sony did say the 80GB model won't be coming to Europe. It has been four months since North America was able to avail of the consoles with bigger capacity, and South Korea got it even earlier. Looks like time will tell if Europe will get the same package.

Gears of War 3 for PS3? Could it be?

With several major developers distancing themselves from Microsoft, it would seem an interest in developing PS3 titles is brewing.

In a recent episode of GameTrailer's Bonus Round, there was a discussion about the current status of Microsoft in the industry and how so many of their closest developers have jumped the exclusivity ship. The panel of Shane Satterfield, analyst Michael Patcher and Newsweek's N'Gai Croal all agreed that the reason Bungie, Bizarre and Bioware all distanced themselves from Microsoft is that they have no desire to work exclusively for Microsoft and would rather be bought out than be stuck creating games for one platform.

Patcher continued the discussion by bringing up the prospect that EA didn't fork over $300 million on BioWare and Pandemic just so they could continue developing Xbox 360 games. Instead Patcher says EA has big plans to bring Mass Effect to the PlayStation 3 through either a sequel, the original title or both.

N'Gai Croal jumps in by stating that Epic is no stranger when it comes to the PlayStation 3 architecture and says, "we pretty much know that Gears of War 3 is probably gonna' come out on PS3." The reason for Gears of War 3 and not the first or second is because Microsoft has Epic sealed into a two-game deal which most likely means they will remain Xbox exclusives. However since the Gears of War series is an Epic property they have the ability to create a different title on a different platform.

If this does turn out to be the case, this could cause a major stir in the industry down the road. Having these massive companies create major titles on the PlayStation 3 could be just what Sony needs to turn the tables in their favor.

Turok Developer Commentary Video

Are you ready for an FPS that throws in big guns, dinosaurs, and a lot of action? Well, judging from the recent developer commentary video of Propaganda Games' Turok (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC), you'd better be. If you haven't heard of the game, you should know that it is the fifth game in the franchise and is going to be powered by the Unreal Engine 3.

The developer's commentary video walks gamers through one of the levels in the game. The game seems to be pretty intense with the game's main hero, Joseph Turok, engaging in multiple firefights with other humanoid beings and dinosaurs. Various weapons were also featured in the video including the knife, a sniper rifle, bow and arrow, and even a shotgun.

The video got us pretty stoked about the game. If it plays anything like the video the developers showcased, then it might become one of the premier FPS games in the market. We'll have to wait till the game's launch in February before we can say for certain though. Anyway, enough talk. Here's the video you've been patiently waiting to see.

First Ever PS3 Unreal Tournament 3 Map

The first user-created content for Unreal Tournament 3 has been released for the PS3 and we have the file exclusively ready for you to download now! The first user-created content is a map called “DM-Shrine” created by Thomas Browett aka Setheran. This amazing creator is a 23 year old graphic designer from Nottingham, England and has been an Unreal player since the beginning.
DM-Shrine is a small map designed for close-quarters combat for 2-6 players. Most UT3 maps tend to be designed for larger player counts, so this is an exciting addition to the game. We’re loving this map at Gaming Today and assume that any UT3 player will love it as well. We look forward to more exciting user-created content in the future.

Analyst skeptical that GTA IV is "panacea" for Take-Two's woes

With improved financial results exclaiming their success for 2007, publisher and developer Take-Two Interactive seems confident to usher in the new year with even more profits, especially with their top-grossing Grand Theft Auto series. Wedbush Morgan Securities Analyst Micheal Pachter is skeptical that Grand Theft Auto IV (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360) will be the solution to all of Take-Two's management and fiscal woes.

Why such skepticism over GTA IV? Pachter stresses that the new management, though "sincere," is well, new. Considering this,Take-Two may not be able to deliver what is needed in order for GTA IV to succeed since the company hasn't exactly handled a task of this magnitude. Pachter also points out that the lack of needed staff reductions to serve as damage control over the lack-luster sales of All-Pro Football 2K8 (Playstation 3, Xbox 360).

He added that "the company intends to grow its staff to facilitate growth of the business, but we don t see its revenues growing fast enough to offset the considerable losses it continues to generate from its core business."

Given that Take-Two is banking on the successful release of GTA IV come spring next year, Pachter feels that the company may have to consider other means to counteract this years losses.

Analyst predicts Take-Two acquisition coming soon

Analyst Mike Hickey from Janco Partners predicts that Take-Two Interactive will "eventually be acquired" if the offered price is right, despite previous downplays of such speculations by Strauss Zelnick, Chairman of Take-Two. If earlier rumors told of a Microsoft acquisition, this one's more of a "up for grabs" deal.

However, Hickey's prior expectations drew Electronic Arts into the mix. The superstar publisher was noted for its acquisition of both Pandemic and BioWare for a hefty sum of US 855 million, and Hickey anticipates that EA may find Take-Two's current intellectual property lineup worthy of exploration. These IPs are, but not limited to:

-Grand Theft Auto

-BioShock

-Midnight Club

-Civilization

-Bully

-Red Dead Revolver

-Manhunt

-Carnival Games

-Max Payne

In fact, the analyst anticipates that the idea of turning Grand Theft Auto into a fully-fledged massively multiplayer online game, offering any takers a means to increase growth. Hickey also estimates that the company's entire worth could be "well over" US 1 billion and that includes an approximated average sales turnout of more than US 400 million.

Jerry Bruckheimer making video games?

Jerry Bruckheimer is getting into video games. The 62-year-old producer of Kangaroo Jack, Pearl Harbor, and King Arthur will be forming a ‘game incubation studio’ as part of a collaborative joint venture with MTV Games.

The studio will be developing all-new IP, with a view to creating properties that can be adapted to TV and film.

Judging by his views on the deal, Mr. Jerry Bruckheimer’s understanding of pop culture is around 30 years behind the times: “Video games represent a new and innovative medium for what we’ve always tried to do, which is to tell great stories. But this medium is unique in that it gives the player control over how those stories unfold.”

No kidding.

“I look forward to working with MTV Games to create new original game stories, always looking for ways to innovate the medium.”

Meanwhile Van Toffler, President of the vaingloriously titled MTV Networks Music & Logo Group, has giant cartoon dollar signs appearing in his eyes: “Jerry Bruckheimer and his innate talent for developing wildly successful entertainment properties that range from action, reality, drama, sports, and comedy are the perfect complement to our vision for MTV Games and the experience our audiences truly crave. There’s a huge intersection between the fans of Bruckheimer films, our audience and gamers, making the potential for this partnership to be as explosive as one of his blockbuster films."

Executives from both Bruckheimer’s gaming studio and MTV will be working hand-in-hand. Gaming is apparently a ‘focal point of MTV Networks’ overall vertical entertainment strategy of super-serving its core audiences with engaging experiences across multiple platforms.’ Sounds ace! We can’t wait to see what they come up with.

Grand Theft Auto 4 Release Date Verified?

GTA4 will undoubtedly be the biggest release on next gen systems thus far! Unfortunately all of us die-hard GTA fans were let-down back in October when the release of the game was changed to "early 2008." I personally thought that they would surprise us all and have it out for Christmas this year, but I guess I was mistaken!

"Local Australian online games retailer Games Warehouse has not only gone live with a date, but also a price for both the standard and special editions of the game. According to them, both versions of the game on both formats will launch on March 15th, with the standard version at AU$108.95, and the special edition for AU$149.95. Interestingly the standard edition is set for AU$119.95 on PS3! What the…?

The special edition will be presented in a metal safety deposit box and will include; the game, a book featuring exclusive artwork, selected soundtrack CD including “new material from top artists”, an exclusive Rockstar keychain for the safety deposit box and a limited edition Rockstar duffel bag. Pretty rad!

Officially there is no word from Rockstar or Take-2 on the matter. Could this be a case of a retailer jumping the gun and going out with the info early? Or is it simply a retailer taking a punt in the hope of luring some pre-orders? We’ll leave that for you to decide while we await a confirmation or denial from the masters themselves." (Via GamePlayer)

Unfortunately we can stop hoping for a surprise release in 2007, because it just isn't going to happen. But the time is dawning on us and Rockstar will undoubtedly pull through for us once again!

PS3: Rainbow Six Vegas 2 Interview

IGN held an interview with the creators of Rainbow Six Vegas 2 recently. With the success of the first installment, No. 2 is sure to be amazing! The interview and more can be viewed below. Rainbow Six has always been a highly-respected title in the gaming world and the newest in the series is looking better than ever. Check out the video, read the interview, and enjoy!

"Now Ubisoft is preparing to unleash the sequel to the masses in Spring 2008. The game brings several new features and modes to the mix so in order to keep all of our sub-machine gun totting ducks in a row we sat down with Jean-Pascal Cambiotti, the Lead Game Designer for Rainbow Six Vegas 2 to get the skinny."

IGN: What new Vegas "hot spots" can we expect to see? Will we revisit any old favorites from the first game?

Jean-Pascal Cambiotti: RSV2 explores completely different areas of Las Vegas and beyond. You will experience the grittier parts of the city and go deeper into the seedier areas. You'll lead your team through areas such as a monorail station, a convention center, back allies and an "old school" strip club. Every mission looks completely different, and plays differently too.

IGN: Shed a bit more light on the new character customization for both single- and multiplayer. Is it going to be identical to the system we saw in the first game's multiplayer, only ported to the campaign? Or will there be some sort of new structure?

Jean-Pascal Cambiotti: Character customization, known as Persistent Elite Creation, is available in both single-player and multiplayer, across all game modes. You create one character, which continually evolves and unlocks gear whether you're playing alone, in co-op or against other players online.

We didn't just plug character customization into the single-player. We tailored the story around the fact that you can play either a male or female character. The way you customize your character also affects your Rainbow teammates. Your teammates will also take on an appearance similar to your own.

By introducing character customization into single-player we've also given you the possibility of equipping body armor, which you can swap out at refitting stations. This makes for an interesting tactical decision between protection and mobility.

IGN: Give us some more details on the "improved AI" of the enemies? Will they now have an answer to the breach and clear move that seemed to dominate them in the first game?

Jean-Pascal Cambiotti: The enemy AI has been improved greatly. In RSV, the enemies would throw smoke grenades at you and essentially blind themselves because they couldn't see through it. Now, some enemies are equipped with thermal and night vision, making them deadlier in darker areas and places with reduced visibility due to smoke or dust.

IGN: Any hints to the storyline? Recap where we left off and where the story is heading this time around.

Jean-Pascal Cambiotti: Although this game is a sequel, it is much more than just that. RSV2 sheds light on what happened before Las Vegas was under attack. So you will lead your team in a very unique and new location outside the US before ever going to Vegas. In addition, the player then arrives in Las Vegas and plays through different mission in Vegas while Logan is in Mexico in the first game. Finally, you will be able to conclude the story in an exotic location that should prove to be thrilling and satisfying.

IGN: When and on what platforms can we expect to see Rainbow Six Vegas 2?

Jean-Pascal Cambiotti: The game will simultaneously be available on X360, PS3 and PC in March 2008.

IGN: XP- allows you to rank up and unlock visual customization. Will there be prestige classes so people can keep ranking a second time or will it end at the same place as RSV? It seemed people ranked to the top rather quickly in RSV and it would be good to extend that pursuit for the hardcore players.

Jean-Pascal Cambiotti: The player is always rewarded while playing the game. Every action, every objective and every victory leads to a reward. The more XP you get, the more you move up in Ranks and unlock visual customization until you get to the Elite Rank. Instead of adding prestige classes, we went a different route and created the A.C.E.S. rewards, which reward players with weapons including 11 new weapons not found in RSV. This reward is based on using the tactics at your disposal.

Updated Folding@Home Features

As we approach one million PLAYSTATION 3 consoles participating in the Folding@Home program, we continue to improve the FAH client. With the new Firmware v2.1 we also prepared an updated version of FAH, which can soon be automatically downloaded by clicking on the FAH icon. This updated version includes the following new features:

If you happen to be one of the people that wants to leave their machine running after they finished their late-night gaming session, but wish to shut it down after a limited period of time, we have a great tip for you:

Go to Settings menu, select Automatic Shutdown and then After Current. You will see a little clock appearing on the top right hand corner of the screen. When this clock reaches zero, the machine will power off completely so you can sleep quietly through the night. In this option the machine will power off after sending the data back to Stanford University so your contribution to the project is maximized.

You may also choose to shut down after a limited period of time (for example, 3 or 4 hours). To do that choose the Automatic Shutdown option and click on the “In 01h:00m” timer. You will now be able to change the timer settings. After rotating the timer to a new time, you should now see your selected timer appear at the top right corner of the screen. This timer will count all the way down to 0 and then power off the system.

To disable active timer at any time, go to Settings, choose Automatic Shutdown and then Disable.

What’s a better Holiday addition to Folding than playing music? We’ve added a great feature in this version in the form of a background music player:

To activate the music player select Music and then a channel. The channels are automatically populated with songs you have stored on your Hard Disk Drive! For holiday music I prefer to choose Dramatic (yeah!) and voila - music is playing.

If you wish to skip to another track, just use a combination of X + left or right arrow. You can also change the channel by choosing X + up or down arrow. Happy listening!

To stop music from playing, select Music again from the main menu and choose “disable.”

Your music playback selection will be saved between consecutive runs of Folding@home.

We hope that these enhancements help improve your FAH experience. The response from PS3 owners really has been spectacular, and thanks to you, the most powerful distributed computer network in the world continues to grow.

Warhawk: Patch 1.20 released

Here's a quick reminder for PlayStation 3 fans: Warhawk's game patch 1.2 has just gone live, and should now be available the next time you power up your console. Dylan Jobe also announced an update regarding Warhawk's much-awaited Operation Omega Dawn booster pack.

As the game Director states, the pack is now available for purchase via the Warhawk in-game store, beating its global release on the PlayStation Network by a full day. Given this big news, we imagine that the players will be peppering the devs with all sorts of questions regarding patch 1.2 and Omega Dawn.

To this end, we're also letting you know that Jobe was kind enough to set up an FAQ regarding both topics, which you can access via the source link below. Wondering what sort of details are being divulged over at the blog? Here's a teaser:

Can both teams have a dropship at the same time?

YES the Combat Dropship only spawns in at specific locations and these bases become really important to hold. They also take awhile to respawn so you don t see them constantly. But some of our best memories from working on Omega Dawn are from crazy Dropship-on-Dropship battles where nearly everyone in the battlefield is in the air!

Can you give us a roundabout estimate as to how much damage a dropship can take before kaboom time?

It s really hard to estimate the time because it varies from weapon to weapon. It also varies because, just like a classic BOSS, the dropship has a weak point that causes more damage. I ve seen a well coordinated team take a dropship down pretty quickly but the inverse is also true. I ve seen a team command a dropship for 10 minutes or more. It really depends on how you and your team or clan works together.

Thanks to Calo for the tip!

Duke Nukem Forever: Finally coming?

I don't know about you, but I personally believe Duke Nukem to be one of the best video games ever! I remember playing Duke 3D back when I had a Gateway 2000 with 133mhz processor! It was fun then and it is sure to be a blast now! The release date for Duke Nukem Forever on next gens is currently slated at "whenever it is done", but this trailer (if it is anything to base gameplay graphics off of) shows us some fairly promising technological advances since ol' Duke 3D! Duke appears to be bigger and badder than ever!

Watch the trailer and let just hope to see some gameplay scenes soon! I am personally very excited about the release of this game!

High Velocity Bowling: Not a Wii, but not bad

If you have not yet had the opportunity to play High Velocity Bowling on PS3, I recommend giving it a try. This game is Sony's attempt at taking the technology of the Six-Axis controller and trying to give you a Wii-like experience.

You have to aim and throw the ball without the help of using the thumb sticks or buttons. The ball-spin is the only thing you need to hold a button for. This game is actually quite a bit of fun for a measly $10.00 USD. I will say it is not as much fun as Pain which was released shortly before this, but it is still a pretty good time and a good show of what 'could' be done with the Six-Axis' technology.

It is definitely more 'clunky' than the Wii, but it is a very good first attempt at such a thing. Although it is not as fluent as the Wii, it is still a good time and recommend trying it out. For $10.00 USD on the Playstation Network, you really can't go terribly wrong. Enjoy!

Saints Row 2 updates

Saints Row 2 (PS3, 360) by THQ is certainly looking better and better. Aside from in-depth customization, Saint's Row 2 has other new, more exciting elements such as aircraft, using hostages as meat shields, and dual-wielding weaponry.

We're not kidding when we said in-depth customization. Gamers can choose to let characters walk around in lingerie (even those who aren't meant to wear lingerie), and even create transsexual characters if they so wish.

The introduction of aircraft into the franchise doesn't only mean that there will be air mobility. In fact, aircraft can be used as weapons as well, with the ability to smash planes and helicopters into buildings and other structures.

However, one of the major new features in Saint's Row 2 is the ability to play a single-player campaign with a friend in co-op mode. We've yet to see more detailed information about this exciting new feature, so stay tuned here for more updates!

NBA 08: Online Team Play

Cyber-athletes, get ready for a face-rocking new feature set to turn your NBA Live 08 (PS3, PSP, Xbox 360, Wii) online games into deeper, more social experiences. EA Sports has announced the new downloadable feature called Online Team Play and it's going to be available on the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 versions.

In Online Team Play, 10 players from across their respective regions can now get together in a single game for some five-on-five action. The feature will be automatically available for the Sony PS3 version once you go online, while Microsoft Xbox 360 owners can get it over from Xbox Live.

When playing as a team, virtual ballers must work like a real team does in order to win. Not everyone can be Kobe Bryant and do much of the scoring. Some people will have to do the dirty work off the glass or be assigned to shut down the opposing team's key players.

This is an excellent addition indeed to the proud NBA Live franchise despite its ups and downs. We can't wait to try this out ourselves.
